Alternatives to religious ceremonies

More couples are choosing to have their wedding service conducted in locations other than places of worship. There are many reasons for the recent trend, particularly the ability to customize the ceremony (special readings, songs and unique locations) in a way that may not be allowed in a religious ceremony. Another reason is that the bride and groom may be coming from different religious backgrounds and do not wish to choose one religion over the other.

Cost may be another factor. A couple can have the ceremony and reception in one place, rather than having to worry about preparing, decorating and cleaning up two separate locations.

Here are a few alternatives to a religious ceremony location:

  • City hall/Justice of the Peace

  • Parks, orchards, gardens

  • Wineries

  • Ships or boats

  • Hotels

  • Private country clubs or yacht clubs

  • Local landmarks or historical locations

  • Restaurants

  • A private home

To get more ideas for ceremony locations, contact your local visitors or tourism bureau, local libraries, landmark or historical societies and local parks departments.
