Who pays for what?

Traditionally, the bride's family pays for most of the wedding expenses but because of high prices that is not always the case anymore. There are no longer set standards on who pays for what. Many families now decide to share the costs and more brides and grooms are taking financial responsibility for the wedding themselves.

The following is a list of who traditionally pays for what:

The bride

  • The groom's wedding ring

  • Gifts for the female attendants and the groom

  • Personal stationary

  • Lodging for her out-of-town attendants

  • Bridesmaids' luncheon (this may also be paid for by the bride's family)

The groom

  • The bride's engagement and wedding rings

  • The marriage license and any other legal documents

  • Gifts for the male attendants

  • The bride's bouquet, the bride's going-away corsage, corsages for the mothers and grandmothers on both sides and all of the boutonnieres

  • Lodging for his out-of-town attendants

  • The fee for the clergy

  • The honeymoon

  • The gift for the bride

The bride's parents

  • Engagement party

  • Their own attire

  • All the decorating costs

  • Facility rental

  • Ceremony costs

  • Wedding photography/videography

  • Wedding invitations, announcements and mailing costs

  • The bride's gown and accessories

  • Musicians

  • Bridesmaids' luncheon

  • Bridesmaids and flower-girl bouquets

  • The reception, gratuities

  • A wedding gift for the couple

The groom's parents
  • The rehearsal dinner

  • Their own attire

  • Their travel and hotel expenses

  • Getting the gifts to the newlyweds new home

  • A gift for the couple.
